In short, we take the calendar from the FDU.edu/yeshiva page, do a little investigating and post the names of all the [largely unqualified] people who give these courses so you choose the few classes that might actually be worth your while.

Most of the names link to their pages on Rate My Professor to help you evaluate them. Please make sure to leave a review of them once you finish the course.

Good luck!

Lifehacker compiled a fantastic list of free courses available online from some of the top universities and instructors in the world. Most of us have heard of or used Khan Academy, and a handful have taken courses on Udacity but how many of you are aware of the incredible options there are for an online education?

In my experience, it happens to be that the online courses I’ve taken from Udacity and Coursera were far better than any in class course on the same topic. The online versions provide far better content, practicality and ease of use – and why wouldn’t they? They have to be! Because they don’t offer recognized degrees or the classroom experience, the only thing left to offer is actual content.

Universities have lost their incentive to provide quality education at reasonable prices since they have convinced most of us that we must attend if we have any hopes of ever getting a job. As the future will demonstrate, this won’t be the case.

If you want exemptions, higher status or a better shot at getting into a future university (i.e. Law School, Med School etc) you need to have your Yeshiva credits transferred to your undergrad transcript (this is if you have not graduated yet. Obviously if you’ve already graduate you’ve done this already).

Many people put off transferring the credits. This is a mistake.

Yeshiva credits on their own are not worth anything. They only acquire value when they are placed on a real universities transcript. This process can take a few weeks, and if you need to send out applications (in advance of graduation etc) you need to have them already attached.

How to attach them: Simply ask the secretary in your Yeshiva to mail a sealed, stamped copy of your Yeshiva transcript to the secretary of your university. That’s all there is to it. The rest happens automatically, but follow up to make sure it was received.

If you plan to include CLEP credits on your degree, make sure you understand how the CLEP system works and what tests you should take. Also, START PREPARING FOR YOUR CLEP RIGHT AWAY. If you wait until you finish all your courses to start studying, many of the Yeshiva Degree universities – like any other – will not let you transfer credits after six months of finishing your last course. You need to transfer your CLEP credits before, or at least during the time you’re taking other courses there. People have managed to transfer credits after six months of finishing required classes but it was a lot of heartache, bureaucratic procedure and a huge pain. Avoid it.

Some things to consider about CLEP:

How many CLEP credits can you transfer? (Usually same question as: How many credits can you transfer from institution other than Yeshiva?)

Does CLEP offer exams for courses that you are required to take? (I.e. If you need English credits, CLEP offers English exams that are accepted almost everywhere)

Should you CLEP or should you take the course? How well can you do on your own?

Be sure to test out your CLEPing ability with the sample tests by clicking HERE

WHERE TO CLEP: The best place to take the CLEP test is at Darchei Noam, on Avenue J in Brooklyn. It’s very Heimish – you can drop in anytime (though call a little in advance to make sure a spot is available). Call (718) 338-6464. Cost is roughly $100 – same as anywhere else and cheaper than some Community colleges CLEP centers.

This is important, especially for Canadians who are on student visas or still claim residence in Canada: Make sure to fill out your schools health care waiver immediately, so you don’t get charged the premium which can be very expensive ($400 in FDU). Double check with your parents and make sure you have a plan (i.e. BlueCross) that covers you while travelling, studying, at a really really long friends wedding etc….

If you are American and your parents or you have a health care plan that covers you, make sure to waive this ‘service’ right away.

The deadline comes quickly. Read the waiver and make sure you send it in at least a week before the deadline. It will save you hundreds of dollars.

In the event you miss the deadline and get stuck with it, at least make sure to use up all the benefits. Buy new glasses or fracture an ankle.

Thank you to reader Y.W. for putting this together.
